Sami & Ari

Reduce Cracks. Improve Performance. Extend Pavement Life.

SAMI (Stress Absorbing Membrane Interlayer) and ARI (Anti-Reflective Interlayer) are preventive interlayer systems used beneath overlays to absorb stress, minimize movement transmission, and delay reflective cracking — one of the leading causes of premature pavement failure.

SAMI – For Bituminous Over Bituminous Pavements

SAMI is a thin PMB-based spray-applied membrane placed between aged bituminous layers and new overlays. It acts as a flexible cushion that absorbs load stress and thermal stress from the base layer — helping the overlay last longer without developing surface cracks.

ARI – For Bituminous Over Concrete Pavements

ARI is applied when a bituminous overlay is constructed on top of a rigid (concrete) pavement. In this case, the movement at joints or cracks in the concrete base is highly likely to reflect upward into the overlay.

At Ooms, ARI is implemented using Ooms GlassGrid Reinforcement — a high-strength, self-adhesive fiberglass grid that the upward propagation of reflected cracks from underlying layers. Combined with proper joint treatment and a tack coat, the GlassGrid becomes a load-distributing, crack-arresting interlayer within the overlay.

SAMI absorbs. ARI reinforces. Together, they protect your overlay investment.

Why It Matters

Without a proper interlayer,
reflective cracks from the base layer can:
  1. Quickly resurface through the new overlay
  2. Allow water ingress and sub-base weakening
  3. Accelerate aging and oxidation of the binder
  4. Increase long-term maintenance and reduce lifecycle value
SAMI and ARI interlayers:
  • Delay reflective cracking significantly
  • Improve overlay fatigue resistance
  • Increase pavement life by 30–50%
  • Enhance bonding and structural continuity
  • Reduce lifecycle maintenance costs

The Ooms Difference

One Team. Multiple Technologies.
One Goal: Road Longevity.

Whether it’s a flexible or rigid base, we offer end-to-end delivery of interlayer systems, backed by:

  • PMB formulation and full-width sprayer for SAMI
  • Ooms GlassGrid Reinforcement for ARI
  • Crack/joint treatment and surface readiness checks
  • Expert supervision to ensure adherence to project specs
  • Integration with tack coats, overlays, and other pavement systems
  • Experience from highways, city roads, and multiple airport runways

We don’t just apply membranes or grids — we engineer the layers between your pavement and problems.
